Get Rid of Bothersome Acne Scars with SkinPen® Microneedling

There’s nothing quite like the carefree days of our youth when everything was a blank slate. If, however, you struggled with acne and you’re now left with unfortunate reminders across the surface of your face, we can restore that blank canvas using an innovative microneedling technology called SkinPen®.

At High Rock Internal Medicine, our team of medical and aesthetic providers prides themselves on ensuring our patients have access to the tools they need to both feel and look great. As part of our extensive services, we’re equipped with the latest technologies, including the SkinPen, which is cleared by the FDA to treat acne scarring.

Here’s a look at how SkinPen microneedling can clear away the wreckage of an acne-riddled past, leaving only fond memories behind.

Acne scarring

If you struggled with acne during your teenage years, you may have been left with pits and scars. In young skin, these scars typically don’t make much of an impact, as your skin enjoys ample amounts of collagen, the protein responsible for the structural support of the tissue, and can heal itself.

Beginning in your 20s, however, your natural production of collagen begins to wane by about 1% a year. As you age, therefore, existing scarring can become more noticeable as your skin slowly loses its support from below, allowing surface issues to become more prominent.

Tackling acne scarring with SkinPen

SkinPen was cleared by the FDA in 2018 to treat acne scarring in adults 22 years and older, the age when your collagen production begins to decline.

To get rid of acne scars, SkinPen relies on microneedling technology, a technique in which we create micro injuries in the treatment area to spur a mild healing response in the tissue. With microneedling, we initiate a three-phase process in your skin:

1. Inflammation

When we run the tiny needles over your treatment area, they break up old scar tissue by puncturing your skin, which triggers an immune response. As part of this response, your body disinfects the tiny “wounds,” flushes out any foreign matter, and increases circulation to the area to encourage regeneration and repair of your tissues.

2. Proliferation

By proliferation, we’re referring to how your tissue rebuilds itself from within, on a cellular level. The goal here is to encourage your body to rebuild the damaged tissue with healthier skin cells aided by a new network of blood vessels.

3. Remodeling

This phase is where the SkinPen microneedling technique really shines. In creating a matrix of micro injuries, we stimulate your collagen production. Creation of collagen is a natural healing response, and it’s designed to help shore up weakened areas in your skin, which is what creates scarring in the first place. With SkinPen, however, we create only tiny injuries, and your collagen comes online a little more slowly, rebuilding the structural support in your tissue in a way that leads to smooth, scar-free skin.

SkinPen timeline

Not only is our SkinPen effective, the treatments themselves don’t require any downtime, which means you’re free to get on with your day. You may experience a little redness or swelling in the treatment area, but these side effects are generally short-lived.

Most of our patients benefit from three treatments, which we space apart by a month to allow time for your tissue to respond. Of course, the number of treatments you need depends upon the extent of your acne scarring.
